Isla Ometepe

Isla de Ometepe Located within Lake Nicaragua (also known as Cocibolca), Isla de Ometepe—meaning “Two Mountains” in the indigenous Nahuatl language—is a natural wonder. This island, formed by two towering volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas, rises dramatically from the lake’s surface.

Here’s what makes it special:  The island’s twin peaks dominate the scenery. Volcan Maderas, though dormant, stands at over 4,500 feet, while Concepcion (over 5,250 feet) has been active since 1880. Istián, an isthmus formed by ancient eruptions, connects the two volcanoes.  In 2010, Isla de Ometepe was declared a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Its wetlands and tropical rainforests, rich in Spanish cedar and other evergreens, contribute to its ecological significance.

The forests on the volcanoes’ slopes harbor diverse plant and animal species. White-headed Capuchin monkeys, Yellow-naped Parrots, and guayabón fruit trees thrive here.  Ometepe offers cycling and hiking trails, natural swimming holes, kayaking, and eco-lodges. Whether you explore the volcanoes or relax by the lake, the island’s magic awaits.

May to October is the low season, with daily rain but fewer crowds. April and November are shoulder seasons. December through March is peak tourist time, with perfect weather.  Ometepe Island invites you to discover its nature, adventure, and Nicaraguan culture. Explore this sacred place where gods once dwelled, surrounded by freshwater and volcanic peaks
